Jul 1, 2006 Africa: AIDS Treatment Progress Reports
Newly-compiled performance results show that as of end April,
544,000 people have begun antiretroviral (ARV) treatment through
Global Fund-supported programs - up from 384,000 six months ago.
And despite the pressures for competition between the U.S.
bilateral PEFPAR program and the Global Fund, reports from
implementing agencies say the stress on operational level is on how
to use resources from both programs to maximize action against
AIDS. But sustainability of funding is a looming obstacle, with
the projected overall funding gap for this year at some $5 billion.
Jul 1, 2006 Africa: Doha Deception Round
As negotiators again reported "no progress" at international trade
negotiations in Geneva, 100 developing nations released a statement
saying they were still willing to negotiate but that the chasm
between the views of rich and poor countries was huge. Even if a
face-saving agreement is reached over the next months, critics said
that major powers had already demonstrated that they had no
interest in proposals to address developing country concerns.
Jun 27, 2006 Gambia: Defending Press Freedom
The Gambian government has blocked a non-governmental forum of
freedom of expression scheduled to take place in Banjul on June 19
and 30, prior to the African Union summit in the Gambian capital.
But media freedom groups will still be focusing on threats to free
expression in Gambia and demanding an investigation of the murder
of Gambian journalist Deyda Heydara, which took place 18 months
ago.
Jun 19, 2006 Somalia: Renewing Diplomacy
After several months of escalated fighting in Mogadishu prompted by
U.S. covert funding for a warlord alliance against Islamic militia,
a victory for the militia has led to unaccustomed calm. After a
heated internal debate, U.S. policy has shifted to support of
multilateral diplomacy. But the threat of renewed violence comes
both from multiple internal divisions and the risk that even
multilaterally decided external involvement could accentuate rather
than relieve internal divisions.
