Seattle Times Questions - August 2002

1     What is the greatest problem facing the region that you can help remedy?  What will you do?

It's time to secure our air and seaports, our shorelines, and the Canadian border.  This can be accomplished by increased policing of these porous vulnerabilities by expanding Coast Guard and Border Patrols and strengthen the Sea-Tac Airport Police Force.  Cargo Aircraft and General Aviation areas must be brought under much tighter controls.

2     What, if anything, should Congress do to expand health-care coverage?

Every attack on private health insurance markets should be resisted.  A genuine free market in health care will encourage competition and help reduce costs. Comprehensive Tort Reform would take the bite out of insurance premiums and promote personal responsibility.  Insane lawsuits awarding multimillions, punch taxpayers right in the fries.

3     If you could pass one bill, what would it be and why?

Legally managing marijuana will generate billions in tax revenue that can provide prescription medicine for seniors, and put criminals out of business. Offering compassionate treatment for drug addicts instead of jail allows prisons space to keep violent offenders behind bars.  This reduces overcrowding and saves tax dollars better spent pursuing dangerous offenders, and allows police to watch for terrorists.

4     What should be done to safeguard civil liberties and privacy as federal investigators gain broader powers to pursue suspected terrorists?

Government curtailment of civil liberties preceded by terrorist attacks must be smashed-or our society will eventually lose our greatest asset: FREEDOM.  Americans can handle the truth, that the President and the Congress are not capable of preventing terrorist attacks.  Congress should stop pretending otherwise.  Let's focus on combating terrorism within our free society, and eliminate its causes.

5     What should be done in the wake of corporate scandals?

Stop Corporate Welfare!  When hard working Americans tax dollars end up in the coffers of wealthy corporations through government subsidies, this is theft.  It flows through the corporate pipeline in oil-industry tax-write offs and agricultural bailouts, to name a couple.  Many of these "welfare" recipients win their subsidies after making campaign contributions. This is bribery.  We must reform this system.

6     What should the federal government do to address the regions transportation problems?

Throwing more money at our traffic mess will not fix the problem, without ensuring tax dollars are spent efficiently.  Cutting the bureaucracy will not completely solve our problem. But it will help.  In Washington State, 468 entities are involved in decision-making and funding. This can't be effective.  When reforms cannot make government services efficient, the private sector should provide them.

7     What value do you hold above all others and why?

I believe in the inherent dignity of human life. That life and its environment are connected. It is through this interconnectedness that makes altruism the only viable path to personal happiness.  I believe in the limitless potential of each person to make a difference.  The right of each person to pursue self-development is the path to peace.
