A Word from Joe:
AS CONSERVATIVE AS GOD'S WORD, AS LIBERAL AS GOD'S LOVE...
In the last 6 weeks, after $2 million of direct mail and television commercials...I have been castigated as a liberal, immoral person by Mike Rogers and his repulican party committee. In their own desparation to avoid debates on substantive issues, Mike Roger's campaign has waged a war of imagery and name calling against me with lots of special interest dollars. "These advertisements should be enough", they say. "Let's wipe him out, we have enough money." They say.
As I ponder the charges of liberalism waged against me by Mike Rogers, I am motivated to cast the burden of proof back of these charges back upon trial lawyer, Mike Rogers.
My late friend, Rev. Bob Baggott (his wife Betty is mentioned in campaign news) allowed me to use a phrase he used on the church bulletin...'As conservative as the word of God, as liberal as the love of God.' It always stuck with me. It also reminded me that as people of faith (and politics) we can be true to conservatism, while being true to the liberal and charitable mission of Christ.
My politics are not conflicted, nor are they out of the mainstream. As bible believer, I know that the rigid discipline of the word of God for our life action is part of the conservatism of my life...as is my upbringing. As a Christian person who knows that charity, love, and compassion, are liberal actions of love that are critical to the faith...some would call me 'liberal'. I want to care for the sick and dying. I want to protect the enviroment and veterans. I think school kids and teachers deserve more money. I want women to feel empowered in our world. I believe that corporate responsibility is real and folks get wronged. I know that life begins before conception and that responsibility of action for your behaviors is a basic tenant of a society. We should love all, but demand that each person be held accountable. I am in tune with the people of faith and of the third district.
Quit calling me names Mike, quit dodging debates, quit thinking that money and Washington endorsements will win this race you. Are you a conservative or liberal, and what is your biblical basis for it Mike?
Many of us are waiting Mike. May you be forgiven of the lies you tell about me, while you be forgiven for the lack of liberal instincts of love, truth and fair play.
Joe
SUPPORT FOR OUR PRESIDENT AND MILITARY AS WE PREPARE FOR NEEDED ACTION AGAINST IRAQ
When America makes a democratic decision to move forward with potential military action, we should move as a country united. I supported the passage of the authorization adopted by Congress earlier this week to empower our President to take action appropriate to defend America, our allies and interests as it relates to Saddam and Iraq.
It is important that Congress appropriate the necessary funds to complete the mission given our men and women in uniform. Our leaders should continue to find a peaceful and a purposeful end to the potential threats of Saddam, but when it is time to move against this dictator, let us move as a country with resolve.
Putting America First means putting aside partisan interests long enough to unite and take care of America's security. I will always take this position as a United States Congressman. Let us pray for our President, all leaders around the world and especially for our troops and law enforcement officials. Joe
