A Word from Joe:
ISSUES GALORE...THE PEOPLE OF THE THIRD DISTRICT CONTINUE TO VALIDATE OUR CLAIMS AND POSITIONS ON ISSUES!
My travels this weekend took me into 8 of the district's 13 counties. I shook hundreds of hands and listened closely as the voters of east Alabama spilled their guts to me about this race for Congress. Their opinions served only to validate the positions this campaign has taken on behalf of real people and provide further proof that Mike Roger's character assasination of me and the partisan angle of 'GOP this and GOP that' is blowing up in his face.
Every where I went people want to talk about health care issues; veteran issues; prescription drug costs; the state of public schools and public education; personal debt, college tuition and how to pay for college, jobs-economic development; fair trade vs. 'free trade; crime; racial profiling; saving our rivers and lakes; environment (incineration, quarries); corporate corruption; negative tv ads; the war on Iraq; the loss of fortunes in the stock market; dirt track racing and the desparate partisan rhetoric by my opponent. It's about YOU not GOP.
People want a congressman that they can talk to - person to person, not through an aide or Roger's spokesperson. They want more debates on their issues (hello Mike...) They were glad I came to their school, town festival, civic meeting, ball game, and dirt track race. They are glad that we are running a grassroots race for congress that includes their opinion.
They approve of my profile as a pro-God, pro-life, pro-small business, pro-gun, pro-pledge, pro-environment, pro-fair trade, pro-senior, pro-education democrat. They know that I am a person of faith, family, community service that is pure of heart and is being attacked by the hundreds of thousands of dollars of special interest Washington DC soft dollar expenditures. The slick mailings and attack tv and are only making them mad. They think we are down to earth, genuine, and being assasinated by mean people who only want to retain power and not the opportunity to help serve their fellow man.
Voters are smarter than consultants and political party operatives think they are. They see through the rhetoric and want substance, person to person. Thanks to the hundreds of you that I met this weekend. I heard you and thank you for giving me your opinion and for making me a better candidate. I hope you remember me on November 5th. All my best. SUPPORT FOR OUR PRESIDENT AND MILITARY AS WE PREPARE FOR NEEDED ACTION AGAINST IRAQ
When America makes a democratic decision to move forward with potential military action, we should move as a country united. I supported the passage of the authorization adopted by Congress earlier this week to empower our President to take action appropriate to defend America, our allies and interests as it relates to Saddam and Iraq.
It is important that Congress appropriate the necessary funds to complete the mission given our men and women in uniform. Our leaders should continue to find a peaceful and a purposeful end to the potential threats of Saddam, but when it is time to move against this dictator, let us move as a country with resolve.
Putting America First means putting aside partisan interests long enough to unite and take care of America's security. I will always take this position as a United States Congressman. Let us pray for our President, all leaders around the world and especially for our troops and law enforcement officials. Joe
