Mike Rogers and His Washington Cronies Distort Turnham Record; Hide Rogers’ Real Record on Taxes
Congressional candidate for Alabama’s 3rd District Joe Turnham has never voted for a tax increase. In fact, Turnham wants to kill the death tax, end the marriage penalty, double the per child tax credit and lower our income taxes. Turnham will fight to relieve the tax burden that is hurting people in the 3rd district.
“I have never voted to increase taxes,” Turnham said. “We can accomplish our goals of protecting Social Security, keeping our jobs in Alabama instead of Mexico and lowering the costs of prescription drugs without passing the burden onto Alabama families.”
FACT: Turnham’s true views on “the death tax” are on the record going back to 1998. In an Associated Press story from October 15th of that year, Turnham said he wants estate tax relief as well as reducing the payroll tax, especially for the self-employed, and he opposes plans for a national sales tax and flat taxes. Also, in a 1998 questionnaire from Project Vote Smart, Turnham said he wanted to “greatly reduce” estate taxes.
But Mike Rogers and his Washington cronies want us to believe just the opposite. Why? Because it is Mike Rogers who has a terrible history of voting to raise taxes on our hard working Alabama families. Yes, it is Rogers who has a record of tax increases. In fact, Rogers’ Republican colleague and opponent in this year’s primary, Jeff Fink, provided the voters with research showcasing that Rogers voted for 41 tax increases. Rogers’s record includes voting for a 1995 tax that would raise motor fuels by 13-cents and increase sales taxes in Coosa and Fayette Counties.
Rogers’s history of tax hikes goes back to 1988, when he was a Calhoun County Commissioner. Rogers planned to use a $6,800 survey to help them sell local voters on a proposed 2-cent countywide gas tax.
Joe Turnham will fight to stop those taxes that hurt Alabama’s families and small businesses. Turnham wants to end the marriage penalty, kill the death tax and protect our families from a tax system hurting Alabama families and small businesses. What Joe Turnham is not interested in are deficit creating, Social Security raiding tax breaks for huge corporations like Enron and WorldCom and Halliburton.
A small businessman and economic development consultant, Joe Turnham knows that we must win the war on terror and provide a real prescription drug benefit. Those measures that affect our families and small businesses come before tax-payer funded payments to big rich corporations and big government. Joe doesn’t stand with the corporate and big government elite. He never will.
Mike Rogers should be ashamed for such misleading, negative attacks. Desperation leads to terrible decisions and horrible tactics.
SEEK THE CONSENT OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND THE WILL OF CONGRESS BEFORE INVADING IRAQ
As our country readies itself for a war with Iraq, it is imperative that the President and his cabinet confront the American people and Congress to fully inform us about the missions, costs and exit strategies associated with military action.
Saddam needs to go. He is a threat to the whole civilized world. He has hurt his own people and rules with terror, not democracy. His actions threaten peaceful nations and people. Acts of terror cannot be tolerated. I fully support his ouster and and civil, democratic rule in Iraq.
How do we proceed? Over 3,000 Alabamians and 62 Guard and Reserve Units are on active duty. Many active military personnel from Alabama are deployed in the war on terror. I support the troops and will fight to see that they have what they need to succeed and return home safely.
There is a process and a debate that needs to take place before commiting this nation to protracted war in the Middle East. It begins with assessing the threats, risks associated with geo-political instability in the region. Most importantly, is the cost to our own nation. American soldiers are the best in the world. They are ready to go and succeed on any mission given to them. Let's not compromise their safety, mission, or certainty of return by forfeiting a chance to get full cooperation of the American people, our international allies, and Congress, before massive troop commitments are made to this war.
When America commits, let us commit! Let's be 'One America', but we must be together. Let's have a real debate now on the appropriate use of force, the duration of occcupation, the financial cost and the consequences to our actions to world stability. But let's put America First. This land is our land and our interests must be defined and defended.
Let us all pray for peace in our world and in our land. Let us pray for the leaders of our nation as they deal with matters at hand. May God Bless America!
