A Word from Joe:

OLD FASHION DEBATE GOOD FOR THIS CONGRESSIONAL RACE!

What we need is good old fashion debate on the issues of the day. I was pleased to join my opponent, Mike Rogers for a live, televised debate on Tuesday night at Jacksonville State University. The debate was sponsored by the Anniston Star, JSU and TV 24.

The debate gave us both a chance to face the camera and the voters and plead our case as to why we want to represent them in Congress. I feel good about my performance and give Mike credit for a good debate as well. Issues need the light of day. Voters need more than commercials and slick mail. Voters need to 'kick the tires' and 'check under the hood' before selecting a candidate.

I am ready for more debates. We need at least several more debates so we can talk about all the issues and our plan to help our people in East Alabama. Let's keep talking and telling our story. We have much momentum after this debate. Passion, heart and being wise about the issues affecting our nation is winning over name dropping, special interest bosses and partisan agendas. Keep the debate going. Thanks for your support!

INCINERATION ISSUE DEMANDS LEADERSHIP, SWORD OF SOLOMON!

One of the most important issues facing the third congressional district is the safe and prompt disposal of some 7% of the nation's stock of chemical weapons stored at the Anniston Army Depot. Secondarily, we must assure our people that the long range prosperity and purpose of the Depot itself is protected. Safety of our people and competent environmental safety is tantamout.

There are many articulate voices that have presented salient points regarding incineration. The uncertainty and certain risk we face from both storage, transport, and disposal present many potent arguments about which direction we need to consider. Actual incineration of the weapons is set to begin in October or thereafter. The new congressman will inherit the awesome task to oversee the disposal while guaranteeing the safest process.

Our campaign has offered the only written comprehensive policy position on this dynamic issue. It is being posted to our site. It gives approval to move forward with incineration provided very specific demands for environmental protection and emergency preparedness are met. It stakes out our position as a guardian of this process for the public's best intests. It is honest and is our attempt to use Solomon's sword to dissect this life-threatening issue. May God give us the wisdom to properly evaluate this issue in an ongoing manner and to put America and your family's interests first, above money or political expedience. Joe
