A Word from Joe:
A PLAN OF ACTION, A FRIEND FOR TALLADEGA COLLEGE...!
I was honored to be on the campus of Talladega College and to meet with administrators and student leaders to discuss the dynamic potential of this historic institution of higher learning. Talladega College is an integral part of the landscape and local economy of East Alabama. It needs a proactive Congressman that knows the history, mission and challeges facing Talladega College.
Talladega is one of 4 HBCU's that are located in the third congressional district. Alabama State, Tuskegee University and Southern Community College are other great HBCU schools. HBCU's are part of the rich cultural and educational history of Alabama. Alabama leads all states of America but one in the number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Just like Talladega, these outstanding institutions need a congressional advocate that can be a full partner in helping them reach new heights.
Talladega College faces its own huge challenges at present and needs to be heard in this campaign for Congress. Talladega's science program is known all over the country for its execellence. Talladega College has the ability to partner in many great projects. The students and staff at Talladega College are bright, committed and ready to tackle the challenges of the 21st Century. Thanks to all who enlightened me at Talladega College and who inspired me to want to serve you and all of the schools and colleges of the third district as your education congressman. We can prosper if we work together. All the best! Joe
INVOLVE CONGRESS AND AMERICAN PEOPLE IN IRAQ DECISION
I support the Commander and Chief wholeheartedly when he acts in his role as our President on matters of national security. As a member of Congress, there will be no 'democrat or republican' when it comes to supporting men and women in uniform. It is called 'Putting America First'.
However, it is fair to have a real national debate about the proper way, time and role for America in a war against Iraq. Congress should be fully consulted. The President must clearly consult with our allies across the world and gain as broad a support base as possible before taking unilateral action. President Bush should go before the American people to explain the threats to our nation and the price that our sons and daughters may pay in the event of an invasion.
I think the President is absolutely correct in declaring Saddam an enemy and threat to peace and Americans everywhere. We need to be ready. We must, however heed the advice of republican and democrat alike before committing this nation to a protracted campaign deep in the Arab world. We must be prepared to defend our allies and national interests, but make clear what those interests are and what the cost will be.
What makes our country great is that we can debate policy, but when our nation moves, we move together...as one people, not partisans. Let us pray for our President and leaders in these days that they will make the right decisions based on the widest and best information. Especially, let's pray for our men and women in uniform everywhere and that peace may come to our world. Joe
