A Word from Joe:

POLL RELEASED BY ALABAMA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SAYS...RACE A 'DEAD HEAT'

Our campaign got independent confirmation of what we have felt all along...this race for the open third congressional district is a 'dead heat' between me and Mike Rogers. Figures released last week by Capital Survey Research (AEA's independent polling contractor) indicates that the race for Congress is within the margin of error with Turnham polling 36, Rogers 40 and 24 undecided. Excluding Rogers home county, Turnham leads Rogers 39 to 36.

The polling also reveals both our campaign and Rogers are unknown by almost half of the voters polled. These facts combine to say that the race for Congress will be won in the field and on the air by lots of activity in the weeks ahead. The poll also shows the district leans democratic overall by 2 or 3 points.

As good as any poll can be, we must understand that much work is left to be done. Many issues need debate and we have many people to touch in this race. Our profile as a candidate and our strong stand on the issues shows that democrats, republicans, independents and even libertarians are looking hard at supporting our campaign. Thanks for your support that has put us in this strong position. We can win with your continued support. Joe

PUTTING GOD, PEOPLE FIRST IS PUTTING AMERICA FIRST!

The stories I hear. As a candidate for Congress you have an opportunity to engage real people about real questions of life, many times unfiltered. Sometimes the fact that you are a political candidate for a major office and are asking their own opinion brings out the raw emotion in people. I love to hear the uncut version of what people really think. Sometimes I know that they won't vote for me, but that's OK, that's democracy... and I want to hear from everyone.

People want to be touched by their candidates and elected officials. They want to know that you have cut through the "spin" and "protocol" and are really interested in them. The wisdom of the voter, that blue collar worker, store clerk, retired teacher, small business owner never ceases to amaze me. It makes me want to serve even more.

If I glean anything from these encounters it is this...people want authenticity, heart, and passion from their candidates. They accept your warts and forgive some of your positions if they only feel that you put people first - more especially that you put God first in your own life. They seem to take comfort in knowing that you have a value system that guides what you do...but don't patronize them and be self-righteous...they don't like that. Putting America First is really simple. It means that you put your perspectives in the right place. After all the policy debates it boils down to the basics of God and our countryman...easily said, harder for many to do. God Bless America. Thanks. Joe
