A Word from Joe:
A CASE STUDY IN HOW TO COPE WITH OUR ECONOMIC DILEMMA - THE BETTY CAROL GRAHAM TECHNOLOGY CENTER
It was my pleasure today to attend and pay tribute to a lady, a community and a way to solve the complex dilemma of a changing East Alabama economy. Today marked the groundbreaking of the Betty Carol Graham Technology Center, located on the campus of Central Alabama Community College in the heart of the third district's Alexander City.
The new facility is part of the Alabama Technology Network and is dedicated to "increasing the competitiveness of companies, improving the effectiveness of the workforce, and enhancing Alabama's economic development efforts through a flexible and responsive combination of education, technical assistance, and technology transfer." That goal is worthy for us to adopt as a model.
The lady for whom the facility is dedicated is State Representative Betty Carol Graham. Ms. Graham is a dedicated public servant and educator who has vision and the ability to build broad coalitions to achieve success. The dedication of this facility was to honor her vision and hard effort to bring this new facility to fruition.
As the third district struggles with declining textile jobs and new auto jobs and the dynamics of world markets...it is nice to know that local and state leaders are getting involved in solving these problems. As your next U.S. Congressman, I pledge to foster more efforts and help folks like Betty Carol Graham bring communities together for these important tasks. We can meet the challenges of tomorrow if we have vision, work together, and let adversity be the wind beneath our wings. Congratulations CACC, Betty Carol Graham and the State of Alabama for putting your best foot forward. Joe
WHEN YOUR STOCKS PLUNGE, RESOLVE TO GIVE MORE...
As I have been struck by the personal stories of loss of value of 401k's and asset portfolios of my friends and family in the last several months, I am still reminded of how blessed we all are.
I am also reminded of the temporal nature of wealth, health, power, popularity and the feeling that we can predict tomorrow. In light of the financial vulnerability that many of us feel right now in these days, I am reminded that what matters most is not what we accumulate, but what we give away. Giving means giving time, heart and resources to the issues, people, beliefs that we hold dear in faith, family and country.
As the son drepression-era parents, I have often been reminded that the resolve of faith and the American spirit to survive and proper can lift us all. We all need to be more frugal, mindful that waste and over consumption can wreak havoc on our country. Let's put America First by helping each other and giving, even though we may hurt right now. Giving sometimes cures the blues and often leads to blessings we never anticipated. It's all a gift anyway. Joe
