letter to the editor - Fairbanks Alaska - after the fuel tax was rejected
Fairbanks Alaska rejects the fuel tax, as we have rejected the sales tax many times, and we were a leader in removing the state income tax. Always reject taxes on labor or the products of labor! As I have raised the issue of splitting the local property tax, to remove the building tax, while adjusting the land portion. To remove taxes on labor or the products of labor ( your home ).

Everybody knows that it is wrong to tax your home! The source for revenue for public services is from the land that it serves. Business and homeowners should not be double taxed to subsidize vacant land. We can remove taxes off labor, while reclaiming vacant business land. This is the mystery that escapes most politicians and economists.

Alaska's most important issue is to renew the existing oil pipeline contract, or run it ourselves. Do we accept 12.5% minus unpaid royalties, Exxon Valdez spill unpaid, and a missing decommissioning fund? Or do we run it ourselves, directly hire Alaskans, and increase the Permanent Fund Dividend?

Clean Natural Gas for Alaska, a railroad connection with Canada, full state funding for education. All the issues from improved pay for police, to park maintenance, will be affected by our e-mail and testimony on the oil pipeline renewal hearings. We are talking trillions of dollars.

Tuesday August 6, 2002 will be the state oil pipeline hearing in Fairbanks, or e-mail the federal government.

The issue for The United States is a strong economy for long term security. A healthy economy comes from the best education. This is the answer in making our children safe; full support for education. So they understand dangers and opportunities in the world. Education leads to increased productivity and creativity to adapt in a changing world.

Walls and weapons are a waste of money. Constitutional rights and public education, creates a safe business environment, and has made The United States the leader among nations. University for all our children would cost less than one new missile system. Education is where we direct our resources, for real security.
