"Cindy and I used a lot of local materials and built a snug home."

Jim Sykes used 350 Palmer straw bales, beetle kill timber columns and beams to form the main structure of the house.  Local river sand was used in exterior stucco.

The house is powered by solar panels, and a wind generator. The back-up gas generator sees most of its use in the winter.  The house is heated by one wood stove with a back-up propane furnace.

The insulation factor of a straw bale is about R57, however the many windows lower that value.

The house shows that local sustainable materials can make a fine home that is kind to the environment and local economy.  Interior finish work remains to be done, but serious political issues need action now.  That's one reason why Jim Sykes is running for the U.S. Senate!
