Council 31 convention largest ever—will set union's course for next two yearsAFSCME Council 31’s 12th and largest-ever convention takes place this week, Nov. 9 and 10. Nearly 1,000 activists will participate in the event, which will be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Springfield. Key speakers include: International president Gerald McEntee; International Secretary-Treasurer Bill Lucy; Bruce Raynor, international president of UNITE; and Rev. Addie Wyatt, UFCW vice president emeritus. Delegates will also participate in more than a dozen workshops with topics ranging from organizing to economics to fighting privatization to confronting the changing economy.

Retirement benefits and privatization on Council's Veto Session agendaThe Illinois General Assembly will convene for the Veto Session on Nov. 7 and adjorn on the 29th. As usual, Council 31 has a full agenda for this session, including advocating for a health insurance plan for IMRF retirees, improved pensions for city of Chicago and Cook County employees and de-privatizing Anna Vets Home.

Cook County locals say "Not on our backs"Contract negotiations have begun for 6,000 Cook County workers. As difficult as the last round of bargaining was, union leaders expect even more trouble reaching an agreement this time. The aftermath of the tragic events of September 11 added to the sense that county revenues would be falling as the economic expansion began to run aground.
